How Much Does It Cost to Make a Pickleball Paddle? Where the Money Goes
People ask us what it costs to make a paddle more than they ask anything else. This post does not answer with a number, because there is no single number. A promotional paddle for an event and a certified performance paddle for a brand launch are different products built different ways. What this post does is explain every factor that moves the cost, so that when you get a quote you understand exactly why it says what it says.
1. Face material
The face is the laminate, a stiff sheet of fibers set in resin, bonded to each side of the core. Fiberglass is the least expensive face. Carbon fiber costs more, and within carbon fiber the fiber grade matters: T300 is more affordable than T700, and T700 is more affordable than T800. (The T numbers are grades from Toray, the fiber maker, with rising strength and stiffness.) The weave you see on a raw carbon face, 3K, 12K or 18K, describes how many filaments are in each bundle of fiber and changes the look more than the cost.
2. Core and thickness
Nearly every paddle uses a polypropylene honeycomb core, a sheet of small plastic cells. Core cost is modest and fairly stable across designs. Thickness matters a little: a 16 mm core uses more material than a 13 mm core, but the bigger cost effect of thickness is on the edge and the construction around it, not the core itself.
3. Construction method
This is one of the two largest cost drivers. Cold pressed construction bonds the faces to the core under pressure at room temperature and finishes the perimeter with an edge guard. It is the traditional method, the tooling is simpler, and it is economical at small run sizes; our minimum is 50 paddles. Thermoformed construction molds the faces and edge together under heat and pressure into a single shell, usually with foam injected around the perimeter. The tooling and the process both cost more, so the minimum run is higher (100 paddles) and so is the unit cost. Thermoforming buys a stiffer, more consistent paddle; whether that is worth the difference depends on who the paddle is for.
4. Shape and tooling
A paddle shape is a mold. More than 120 established shapes already exist on our line and cost nothing extra to use. A new shape means new tooling, which is a one-time cost and a lead time before any paddle can be pressed. The same is true of custom handles, custom edge guards and custom grip caps: a new part means a new mold, and a mold is a one-time expense that only makes sense at a quantity that will use it.
5. Artwork and finish
A full face print, edge to edge, is the most involved finish: the artwork has to be prepared for the face shape, the print set up, and the surface texture applied over or around it. A placed logo is simpler. A raw carbon face with no print is simpler still, and a painted base color with a printed graphic sits in between. Texture choices (sprayed grit, raw carbon, sandblasting) each add a step. Printing on both faces costs more than printing one, and printing different artwork on each face costs more than printing the same artwork twice.
6. Components and their minimums
The small parts carry their own minimum quantities, and this is where small runs get surprised. A standard black edge guard, neck band and grip cap are stock parts included in the paddle. A custom color edge guard or neck band is made in a factory lot; on our line those lots are 1,000 pieces. A custom grip or grip branding is made in a minimum of 500. Custom logo edge guards and caps have their own minimums. If your run is 100 paddles and you want a custom color neck band, you are buying the lot; we hold the remainder for your reorders, but the cost lands on the first run. This is the single most common reason a quote comes back higher than expected, and it is why the Build Room shows every minimum next to the option.
7. Packaging and covers
Standard protective packaging (a bag, bubble wrap and a blister) is included. A stock retail box with your logo is an added cost per unit with a minimum. A fully custom printed retail box is its own design and print project with a larger minimum. Paddle covers have a minimum of their own and can be blank or printed.
8. Quantity
Quantity is the other largest driver, and it works in one direction: the more paddles in the run, the less each one costs. The reason is that most of the setup, artwork preparation, print setup, tooling if any, sampling and proofing, costs the same whether it is spread over 50 paddles or 5,000. Spread over 50 it is a large share of each paddle. Spread over 5,000 it nearly disappears. Material costs also improve with volume, but setup is the bigger effect.
9. Samples and proofs
Before production, every build gets a photorealistic proof of the paddle with the artwork applied. That is included. A physical sample round, three to ten identical paddles built before the run so you can hold the product, is a separate small order and is worth it for any brand launch. Development samples for a new material or construction are more involved and are quoted as a project.
10. Certification
If the paddle will be used in sanctioned play, it needs approval from USA Pickleball, the UPA-A, or both. Testing and approval fees are paid directly to those bodies, not to the manufacturer, and they are not part of the paddle price. Certification also shapes the build: we design with a safety margin, validate by testing, and send paddles marked for certification. A meaningful change to thickness, shape, surface or finish later can require a separate certification, which is a cost to plan for before changing anything. 11. Shipping, duties and timing
Final shipping is quoted separately after the design, quantity, destination, packaging and method are confirmed, and it is quoted DDP. DDP means delivered duty paid: freight, tariffs, customs and import handling are all calculated and included before you pay, so there is no surprise bill when the paddles arrive. Air freight is faster and costs more; sea freight is slower and costs less. Production itself takes roughly 12 business days cold pressed and 25 thermoformed after payment and final artwork approval, and shipping time is added to that.
What a quote is, and is not
A quote from us is a formal document built from all of the above. It is not a menu with prices next to options, because the options interact: the same custom neck band is a rounding error on 2,000 paddles and a major line item on 100. That is why we ask for the quantity, the construction and the components before we talk money, and why the Build Room collects all of it in one pass.

Common questions
Why does a small run cost so much more per paddle than a large one?
Setup costs are the same whether you make 50 paddles or 5,000: artwork preparation, print setup, any tooling, sampling and proofing. Spread over 50 paddles those costs are a large share of each unit; spread over 5,000 they nearly disappear.
Does a thermoformed paddle cost more than a cold pressed one?
Yes. Thermoforming uses more expensive tooling and a more demanding process, which is why it carries a higher minimum run (100 paddles on our line versus 50 for cold pressed) and a higher unit cost.
Are certification fees included in the paddle price?
No. Testing and approval fees are paid directly to USA Pickleball or the UPA-A, not to the manufacturer, and they are separate from the cost of building the paddles.
