The Anatomy of a Pickleball Paddle
A pickleball paddle looks simple: a flat face and a handle. Inside that shape are six decisions that set how the paddle feels, how much it forgives, how much spin it takes and how long it lasts. Here is each part, what it is made of today, and what changing it does.
The face
The face is the laminate bonded to each side of the core. The three materials in use are fiberglass, carbon fiber and, under a printed or painted finish, unidirectional carbon. Fiberglass flexes more and plays livelier with a smaller sweet spot. Carbon fiber is stiffer, more controlled and spreads the sweet spot wider. Carbon fiber is sold by fiber grade (T300, T700, T800) and by weave (3K, 12K, 18K); the grade sets stiffness, the weave sets the look. "Graphite" is an older name for a thin carbon face and is not a separate material. Face materials are covered in detail here.
The surface finish is separate from the material. Raw carbon, sprayed grit and sandblasting all add texture for spin; a smooth or gloss face is lower spin and prints best. Certification limits surface roughness, so a certified paddle's texture is tuned to pass.
The core
Almost every paddle made today uses a polypropylene honeycomb core: a sheet of thin plastic cells, cut to the paddle shape. Polypropylene is quiet, consistent, and forgiving, and it is what nearly every certified paddle is built on. Cell size and wall thickness vary; smaller cells feel firmer and more uniform.
Two older cores still get mentioned. Nomex, an aramid paper honeycomb, was common in early composite paddles and plays harder and louder. Aluminum honeycomb was used in some early designs and dents. Neither is a current choice for a performance paddle, and neither is something we would specify on a new build.
Newer constructions add foam to the core in different ways: foam injected around the perimeter to stiffen the edge, foam strips along the edge inside a thermoformed shell, and in some designs a full foam core in place of honeycomb. Perimeter foam is well established. Full foam cores are a current area of development and behave differently enough that they are treated as their own platform.
Thickness
Core thickness is the biggest single lever on feel. 16 mm is the most common thickness for a control paddle and is where most certified performance paddles sit: a larger sweet spot, more dwell time, more forgiveness. 14 mm is livelier and a little more powerful. 13 mm and below are quicker and more powerful still, with a smaller sweet spot. Thinner is not better or worse; it is a trade of forgiveness for pop.
Construction
How the face, core and edge go together matters as much as what they are. Cold pressed construction bonds the faces to the core under pressure at room temperature and finishes the perimeter with an edge guard. It is the traditional method, proven, and economical at smaller run sizes. Thermoformed construction molds the faces and edge together under heat and pressure into a single shell, usually with foam injected around the perimeter. The result is a stiffer, more consistent paddle with a firmer edge, at a higher minimum run and cost. Cold pressed and thermoformed are compared here.
The edge
Most paddles carry an edge guard: a molded plastic rim that protects the laminate from ground strikes and can be colored or printed. Edgeless paddles finish the perimeter without a guard for a cleaner look and a slightly larger playable face, at the cost of durability on scrapes. On a thermoformed paddle the edge is part of the shell and the guard is often decorative.
Handle and grip
Handle length changes reach and two-handed backhand room. A standard handle runs about 120 to 130 mm; a long handle 140 to 150 mm. Grip circumference is a comfort and control choice: smaller for more wrist, larger for stability. The grip itself is a wrap over a foam or wood core; the neck band and grip cap are the small parts that carry color and branding.
Weight and balance
Most paddles weigh between about 7.5 and 8.5 ounces. Static weight is only part of the picture. Swingweight, how heavy the paddle feels when swung, depends on where the mass sits. A head-heavy paddle swings heavier and hits harder; a handle-weighted paddle feels quicker at the net. Players often add lead tape to tune this, and on a production paddle the same thing is done by design.
Shape
Shape sets the sweet spot and the reach. A widebody is short and wide with the largest sweet spot. A hybrid is the neutral middle ground. An elongated paddle trades width for reach and leverage and rewards clean contact. Within those families there are more than 120 established mold shapes; each mold family carries its own dimensions, sweet spot behavior and reach, and the handle length rides on the same tooling.
Putting it together
No single part makes a paddle. A T700 face on a 16 mm polypropylene core, cold pressed with an edge guard, plays like a control paddle. The same face on a 14 mm core, thermoformed with foam edges, plays firmer and faster.
